Sagae

Picture
(Watanabe, K /AHS '96)
G - Mature size 30" x 70"
13" x 10" heart shaped, great substanced, wavy, frosted green leaves, with prominent veins and a wide irregular cream margin.  Grayish bloom underside. The leaves have a smooth silk-like look to them. They emerge bright green, margined in deep golden yellow, aging to a frosty silvery gray-green while the margins turn to creamy white. Upright growth habit. 54" scapes of pale lavendar flowers. 13 vein pairs.
Awards: President's Exhibitor Trophy 1982 and 1997, Benedict Award for best variegated leaf 1987, Alabama Hosta Society Award 1991, Best Variegated Hosta 1991 and 2002, Alex Summers Distinguished Merit Hosta 1995,  American Hosta Growers Hosta Of The Year 2000, Benedict Garden Performance Award of Merit 2008.

Notice the insect damage on the leaves of the bushes in the upper right of the picture. They are some sort of bush that is in the valley next to us.  Obviously they have a thinner leaf that shows insect damage...whereas the Sagae hosta looks perfect! This hosta I got in 2008. Picture was taken mid summer 2011.
